i know putting in a bulletproof steering system is awesome to have b/c there is a big chance it will get wrecked on the trail so we have systems nowthat go every which-a-way and are strong as an ox. But...is there anything to beef up the gearbox or pitman arm shaft? i ask b/c i recently sheared my pitman arm shaft on my truck while testing out a few mods i have done recently.

holy crap!! that is rough. I've never seen any chro-mo gearbox shafts... but you can beef up the draglink by using heavy DOM tubing and welding bungs on each end...
The only real way to beef up the steering box is to take the load off of it. The only way you can do that is by going to hydro-assist.
Fishy, I think the problem most likely stems from your steering geometry. See, the drag link is supposed to be straight. That curved style tends to put unwanted stress on the gear box.
Seriously though, that's crazy. I've never seen one of those snap before. Is that a stock pitman arm or a drop pitman?
You know what I'm thinking before I say it but go full hydro and let us all know what you think of it. I'm still dying to give it a try but it's pricey and all these "girly men" are afraid something will go wrong and I'll run over them.
lol ya the 90* curve doesn't help the geometry at all!
i would love to do full hydro but i still do drive it on the street everyday (mostly) i mean look at my tires!
right now i can't even afford a new gearbox!
That's a stock TTB pitman arm, the solid axle trucks run a beefier pitman arm, but, that won't help any in this case, everything uses the same steering box....
Hi steer as in moving the tie rod above the leaf springs? I'm still kicking this around. I'm going to Portland next weekend and am going to check out a few things on Pro's truck to get some ideas. I was having a hard time visualizing the steering setup on my truck. What's the whole deal going to cost you Cutts? And have you figured out how to plumb the ram into the steering box? That's what confuses me.
yes hi steer is putting all your steering above your leafs so that your axle is what hits rocks and stumps instead of your steering.
i am going to use 1.250 OD x 0.812 ID DOM for the tie rod/drag link, 1 ton chevy tre's with jam nuts, andweldin threaded inserts. not sure about pricing right now i am trying to get everything together.
here is what i have come up with so far:
tubing...~$40 for 18'
tre's...~$30-40 each
weld-in inserts...$10 each
D60 kingpin steering arm...$100 each (i am looking on ebay for some cheaper ones)
that is just my basic steering, the hydro will include the fullowing:
ram...~$80
mounts...free, i will make them
hydraulic hoses...~$40 for return and pressure hoses
tapped gearbox...free, i know how to do it
I got my heim track bar and steering linkages for under $300 shipped. the track bar had weld inserts but the steering was tapped into the DOM. I bought new chevy TRE's from autozone.
Drilling and tapping your own ps box is not all that hard. I did mine as well.
