I just had a rebuilt engine put in my motorhome, it's a 1988 ford.My wife tells me there is a lot more heat under the passenger seat than before, I had a look at the exhaust under that side and it seems there is a shield missing. Before I go and question the shop that did the engine does anyone know what kind of shielding should be between the exhaust and the floor? Thanks
Gary
On most Fords, between the cat. converter and floor there is a heat shield. First you have a shield about the converter, and then another one above that to protect the floor. Many times it bolts to the bottom of the vehicle floor.
Most likely, yours was rusted and it was discarded when the motor has done becuase it fell apart. You might look into just clamping a shield to your current exhaust to fix the problem or see if there is a place to bolt up a new one.
The heat shields are basically just a sheet of metal to form an air pocket between the exhaust and body. The factory one is all curved and moulded and such. Replacing it with a simple piece of metal bent the right way would do just as well, imo.
