hi, i had seen in a 4x mag a ad for a heavy -duty u-joint, it looked like it used solid brass for a bearing surface instead of roller needles. they were listed at $130 (a peice, i beleive) are they really worth it or will it stress my axle shafts. my stock steering universals are shot and im trying to figure out if i want stock replacement or heavy-duty replacements. i thought about a c.v. joint conversion also, i wouldnt have that binding on turns, and im running stock 28" tires with stock motor and light-duty 4x4 usage. mainly winter driving and 4-lo for getting up the boat ramp without smoking the clutch. its a '93 ranger s/c 5-spd 4.0 with 74,000 miles. ive had it about a year now. kinda rusty underneath, truck is originally from colorado. anyone heard of / used ox-joints? and where would i get the hub-socket? ford-only item, or snap-on/mac/craftsman? thanks. Dave.
the Ox-locker is for folks who crawl rocks and experience a LOT of wheel spin which is u-joints biggest nemesis! they are worth the moeny if you are gonna beat her to heck and back but for just every once in a while and light off-road duties you can easily get away with autozones Brute Force non-greaseables (thyat's what i use and i haven't had one fail on me yet)

I don't think OX makes a selection for your truck. even if they did, it would be a waste, and you'd have to machine your inner shafts to accept a full c-clip.
I really don't know how to do a cv-conversion on your ranger. I think if you replace your ujoints and make sure your radius arm bushings aren't worn, i think you'll have a lot less binding. my f-150 doesn't bind unless I run it on dry pavement (which your not supposed to do any ways). Just replace them with a quality part like spicer or neapco. I've never used the brute force joints that fishy mentions, but I am sure since borg-warner makes them, they are probably pretty good. The lifetime greased joints take more of a beating since they are totally solid and have no grease passage ways. However, you won't be able to grease them if they get wet or something.
I got my hub socket from Advance auto, but I have a standard Dana 44 axle, so almost everyone has one. Does your truck have allen screws holding on your hub? if it doesn't, I believe the hub comes off with the tire or something like that.
my hub slides over the wheel studs, its a ford-factory auto hub, i plan on changing it sometime soon to a warn manual units. i think my axle is a dana 35. thanks for the info. Dave.

actually I believe it is a D28 not a 35, and the axle nut socket is available just about anywhere I even seen them at walmart but I think they quit carring them but about any parts store should have them or can get them
ox u joints do not require any clips to hold them in. CTM's require full Clips to retain the caps in the shafts. I would not run either in stock shafts only chrome moly.
spicer life series joints are the strongest stock replacement u joint out there.
doesnt look like ctm joints are available for anything other than a 44 or 60, guess i'll just put spicer joints in for now. anything would be better than what i currantly have, what with the rollers missing from the r.h. side.
