Exclamation E4OD Problems

I have a 2000 F53 motorhome chassis with the V10 and the E4OD transmission. I have been having a problem with the transmission, when I first start out from a stop (in Drive) it seems as though it does not want to go (hesitates, but engine is reving up) then it catches and goes fine. Yesterday, another issue slipped in, after the trans caught, I noticed it would not shift out of first unless I backed way off the gas. I was starting out normally.

This is not a constant problem, it only occurs about every 10 starts!

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 97 F53 chassis on my bounder with the 460. Never had that problem, but I recall some discussion about the linkage casing problems on V10???

I can't recall for sure, but it is worth a look.

I will have to take a look at the linkage! I failed to mention that I have the Banks Trans Command on it, for whatever that is worth. It almost feels as though the converter is not locking up at first, as I don't switch out of drive when at a stop light.

I also have the trans command. Is the wiring and connection to it properly connected? Beyond that it might be internal. Does the OD on off have any effect?

I have had the Trans Command installed for 3 1/2 years with no problems until recently. I just took the rig out over the weekend and in 350 miles the trans acted fine! This is one of those problems that is going to be tough since it is intermittant. I have an extended warranty that covers the trans, but I would like to avoid the hassle of getting it to an authorized dealer and then not having it act up until I am on my way back home.

I heard that this is a fairly common problem with other Ford trucks in rental service for U-Haul etc. and was told that they just live with it as they have not had one fail, more of a nuisance type of issue.

F53, I hear you because I have just been through that (see my thread on E40D leaks). My summer trip in my bounder was ruined as I went back and forth to the shop trying to fix leaks and an over heating problem. They could not reproduce the last overheating I had (250 degrees plus), but did stop the last leak (dip stick O ring). They may have done something else, because the temperature is not going above 190 degrees now. Too late for my 4th of July trip! What brand of motor home do you have?

ww4bounder, I believe that we have the same manufacturer, I have a 2000 Pace Arrow Vision from Fleetwood. So far, I have been quite happy with it. I keep thinking about getting a deisel, but I have yet to find one that has the interior amenities that my PAV does for a decent price. Aside from the recent trans problem, I have not had any major issues with the drive train. With the Banks and running synthetics end to end, I have been getting better than 8mpg even towing a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

For anyone that ever gets this drive train, I must say the Banks power pack and trans command are the absolute best investment. The power gain was very noticeable, and the mileage improvement was on the order of 0.5 mpg (not much to some, but on a motorhome significant in my book).
