I'd like to use my '46 for towing, usually just project vehicles to move from here to there. What are my best bets for a somewhat economical engine and trans combo? I'd like to keep it an automatic, and all Ford. I need something that can do the job, but not suck up tons of gas (i.e. no 429 or 460).
An old friend had a '53-ish Ford pickup with a 272 or 292 Y-Block. That truck had some ***** too. I think it would be cool to stick with an engine of similar vintage as the truck, build it up and see how it does .
Socal, ya better watch your potty posting, ol dieselJohn will be upset with ya.
46, You might entertain putting your sheetmetal on a newer chassis. I have always thought those were pretty kool. 351W auto with OD, tilt, AC, power everything. King of the road kinda thang.
I was thinking of a 351W too, but wanted to get opinions. Putting the truck on a later model chassis is out of the quesiton for me. The truck isn't going to be a dedicated tow vehicle, just something to drag my family's other projects around when needed. Thanks all.
form the description of your intent, I will agree the 351W is the best choicem relatively cheap and available. Overdirive is doable, but a C-6 is durable, and once again the cost is reasonable. I got 12 mpg out of that combo in my parent's E150, so judge accordingly. I can't answer on what gear it had, though, but it did ok towing a 20 ft Winnebago.

That's not my rule, it's part the the FTE rules. You should show a little more respect toward the forum guidelines since you're a moderator. I would also appreciate it if you would stop baiting me with those kind of statements, something else you should recognize as inappropriate as a moderator. whell here is my 2 cents 460 c6 with 25% reduction in gear and a over drive unite-douge nash etc...I have a 7000pound dump truck with a 351m and I can hange with most sports cars off the line, you should see there face when I go by them 4.10 gears and smile all the way by
I think a 351 Windsor, a C6 automatic, a 9-inch Ford rear end, and auxillary transmission cooler would be great. I would make sure I had the 61-amp Ford GPD alternator at the very least and I would make wiring provisions for lights and trailer brakes.
Insofar as looks go, I think a bit of dress-up chrome under the hood--brackets, valve covers, air cleaner, and fake braided hose--would rather match the chrome of the grille and the like. It would seem to me to be a great--and practical--mixture and use of the older with the newer.
If you do decide to do these things as have been suggested to you, please do post pictures of it all!
