Okay folks..back to the Ranger forum after a long absence...thanks to a well behaved 98 Ranger with the 3.0l V6. Mostly been hanging out in the talkie forums. So...on to my problem. There is a squeak when I start the truck but goes away after a little while. I noticed however that at different times, doesn't seem constant, it sounds like crickets chirping in my engine when I accelerate. I'm fairly certain its the serpentine belt based on previous issues but wanted to run it by the experts at FTE. I just had the belt and tensioner replaced in December last year. I don't normally do alot of long distance driving, esp since I'm unemployed. This all started after I made a 400 mile round trip for a job interview, most of which was through torrential rain. Could the rain have soaked the belt and its just taking its sweet time drying? Or maybe cause its so freakin hot the belt might have cracked when it dried? Just trying to brainstorm as I type. Hope ya'll can give a fellow Ford driver some advice.
may just need to be tightened. a few months after i replace mine it did similar things so i tightened it and have had no more problems since. my guess is that the belt is getting broken in.
You can't tighten the belt, try lightly sanding the groves on the pulleys and then cleaning with alcohol. If that doesn't work see if you can pin it down to one pulley, I'm thinking the idler is bad.
I was thinking idler pulley also. Might want to get it checked out before that 400 mile trip.
Murphys Law, says it'll probably sieze on the 400 miler & eat the belt.
