Transfer case fluid
I want to change my transfer case fluid but I am confused about what to put back in it. My manual says to use mercon trans fluid. Isn't this alot different than the gear oil that usually goes in transfer cases? Please educate me. P.S. I have a 98 f-150 ext 4x4 with a 4.6 and a 4r70w trans.

Yes it takes Mercon.
Gear oil is too thick for the newer transfer cases.

Thanks Racerguy, My manual says mercon and local dealer says mercon3. Is there a difference?

Some people call it Mercon 3.
Dexron 3 and Mercon are the same and I think that's why they call it that.
Mercon or if they call it Mercon 3 should be what you need.
