'91 ranger - fuel filter? (?)

may be too vague. idles fine, but when i try to accelerate, it chokes & gags & slowly comes up to speed kind up erratically like it's gasping for fuel. do the filters get clogged often? it did this for a a day, i sprayed some carb cleaner in the intake, it seemed to get better for a few days, & now it's back. could be anything as far as i know! any tips GREATLY appreciated as i have to get to work! later guys.

when was the last fuel filter change?have you pulled the codes? if not, do so. also pull a couple of the plugs and see what condition they are in, what color they are (white, grey, or black)

Like elconquistador sez, take 2 minutes to pull the codes. If theres no codes take a couple more minutes to hook up a vacuum gauge to see if the cat convertor is clogged. If cat is OK take a couple more minutes to check fuel pressure.

You can buy an EEC-4 code scanner at Wal mart for 25 bucks. With this it's very simple to pull your own codes. If this IS the original fuel flter, than that most likely is your problem. I change fuel filters on my 2 Fords every 50K.

You can pull the codes yourself, see the tech info thread, pulling eec-iv codes.

still dead in the water...

well, it wasn't the fuel filter. autozone won't pull codes older than '96. is the "eec-4" good for all years? i'm gonna get a new ford truck here pretty soon. i don't have the $30 if i'm just going to use it once on my relic.

eec-iv was up to mid 1995, after that it's ODB-II. You can pull the codes with the procedure in the tech info thread with just a piece of wire.

I second the reccomendation to check the plugs out. If they're black and sooty, its most likely a bad O2 sensor causing your problems. I got some bad gas once in a Bronco II I used to own and it caused the same symptoms you were speaking of. I could clean up the spark plugs and it would run fine for about 5-10 minutes or so (longer if the car was run at higher speeds) until the plugs were fouled up again from the engine running too rich. If you can have a friend look behind the car when the engine is under load, there will probably be a black, sooty exhaust.

The easiest way to tell if you have EEC-IV or EEC-V is to look right beneath the steering column, just to the side of the hood release for a small plastic panel that can be removed. EEC-V, OBD-II compliant vehicles will have a plug here, the EEC-IV connector is under the hood, usually in the vicinity of the starter relay.

i'm about ready to light this thing on fire & push it off a cliff. i'd feel alot better after that. & be no less transportable. if you can get your hands on (1) of the spark plugs good luck ripping the wire off. if i got some pliers on it, i'd just end up tearing the wire apart. i'll have it towed i guess. where is the damn oxygen sensor guys? it's not even listed in the haynes book.

if the wires are in that condition, then that is your problem. change out the plugs with Autolite double platinum (or motorcraft) and a set of Autolite professional series plug wires. im 100% sure that is your problem.

o2 sensor is on the underside of the exhaust manifold near the hook up for the cat.

i was looking at the haynes book again, they show a "spark plug wire removal tool". is that why i couldn't get the wires off? also, do you have to remove much to get to the plugs? they look like they're kind of buried.thanks again guys.
