Water pump

How long do they usually last? Mine just went out, and the truck has 60,000 on it. Its a 99 PSD CC dually. I thought it should last longer, But at least I had the warrenty

That seems to be pretty low mileage for the water pump to fail. However, I have heard that due to the way that the block is forged, there is residual sand cycling through the block and the water pump is very sensitive to said sand. This is why guys install the coolant filtration system on their trucks. I have 48K on my truck and have had no issues yet. I think I read somewhere that you should expect about 100K before water pump failure can occur but I am sure people are getting more than that. I am sure one of the more educated mechanics will chime in with better info.

My uncle had a 2000 7.3L CC Dually and his went out @ 99,995 miles, lol. It was a $900 job that Hall Ford said was not covered by warranty, so I went elsewhere and got it done for $500. Needless to say after looking in the warrenty book, it WAS covered and ford had to stroke a nice check - $200 for the diagnostic / deductable for 2 different things.

Had to replace mine on my 99 250 CC @119000. I asked - they only replace w/remans. Said there's no "new" water pumps available. Paid 300 plus labor for it then saw a pump at shopdiesel.com for 200. Just my .02

Nothing unusual about this job is there? Standard procedure, removing the belt and fan and changing it out? Just curious, mine is still good but it's nice to know ahead of time when/if it finally fails.

no this is very simple water pump job. flat rate is 2.2 hours. i move the overflow tank. remove fan, hoses, pulley and bolts. i took the top idler pulley and the plastic powerstroke cover off to give more room to pull the pump out the top. i am not sure if thats needed but its easy to do. then reinstall. the torque specs i have for the bolt said 35-46 ft/pounds but thats alot for that size bolt going into aluminum so i torqued them to 25. not a bad job.
