Oil Brand

First time having an oil change on my new-use 01 Expy. XLT model 4X2 with 49k on it. Whats the best oil brand and grade for the Expy's? A lot of people said go with M1 Syn or Penn Syn. Is Syn oil good for the engine?

Thanks.....

It is certainly not bad for the engine. Mobile 1 is extremely popular on another forum I am a member of, but its kind of expensive. Get what you can afford, if you can afford syn, all the better.

Use what your manual recommends. I am sure it is 5w20 with the Ford -H spec. As hard as it has been for me to accept such a thin oil, the 5w20 has proven itself with great oil analysis. I prefer the Motorcraft semi syn which is much less than a full synthetic.

The two you asked about would be fine also if you want to spend more money. It's your choice. I choose not to waste my money on synthetic. There are a lot of engines lasting 100's of thousands of miles on dino.

Should just stick with the Motorcraft brand...both oil and filter. It saves you money and they do a really good job of protecting the engine.

I replaced my 5.4L in my 01 F-150 this year it only had 134k miles, I had always used 5w20 Valvoline while on a long trip I needed to get an oil change. I told the guy what I wanted and when I returned he was putting in my oil not from bottles but from the hose hanging from the ceiling. I asked the guy what was going on he stated that they didn’t have Valvoline and only had Quaker State and if I wanted Valvoline I would need to come back tomorrow. I had no intensions on staying in that town till the next day I was heading home and wanted to be there yesterday. 3200 miles later I lost my engine my mechanic pulled the pan and showed me what looked like tar. I say stay away from Quaker State!!

Maybe a happy medium for some are the syn blends .

real ones with PAO are few and far between but I use the thin Saab 5w-30 syn blend " made in Europe by mobil for Saab" in a 4.6 . It's 9.50 for a 4 liter jug and gives me a few more months of service vs regular dino .It's alot like a thin diesel oil in make-up . Lots of magnesium and calcium and a resonable amount of zinc

Mobil has a 5w-30 syn blend here , hard to find sometimes and is not the same as the Saab oil but it's a good oil still yet

he he , I don't own a Saab

"Stay tuned for the next gripping episode. Will Auntie Jack rip their arms off? "

A little internet search on "auntie jack" will show it is an Australian comedy show--something like the Monty Python show. The first article in the following link discusses an episode, "The Empire Strikes a Match, Episode Two":

I use Castrol semi-synthetic 10w30. All the other brands say something on the bottle all scientific or statisticly but castrol just cuts through the crap and tells you DRIVE HARD as hell!!!

I've been using Quaker State on my '87 300 cu in I6 for over 10 years and she's still going strong.

Quaker state is good oil. My cuz had a t-bird 3.8 with 178k miles on it with QS, but the head gaskets went, so he had them fixed and then sold it. But the mechanics of the engine were fine. The car is still around- we still see it driving around.

It may have been the Valvoline building up or who knows what came out of that hose.
