I got a 2 1972 Chevy pickups for free the other day. Originally I thought the tranny was shot as it seemed to have no 1st gear. When I took it out the neighbor informed me that the tranny was actually a 2 speed powerglide.
I don't intend on putting it back in the truck as I want the truck for more of a summer cruiser, but is that tranny worth anything or should I just scrap it. I was under the impression that some drag racers like the 2 speed tranny's.
Sorry I am asking about it here, but I figure I might as well ask the smartest people I know when it comes to cars and trucks. Any info would help.
Actually, you are right, most serious drag racers use them. They are damn near bulletproof when built right. There are many conversions available for bolt on bells and such, and a lot of stock car boys use them too, without the convertor. Stick it on ebay and watch em go!!!! (they convert it for direct drive, no convertor)
Surprising as it is they did put the glides in them. Oil pans are another easy way to id a trans, the TH350 has essentially a square pan with one corner angled off, the glide has a more rectangle pan
Thanks guys for your imput. You answered my question whether to scrap it or sell it. The tranny was not the original tranny just incase you were wondering.
Powerglide? Usually on a sraight 6, right? (At least in a pickup) You wouldn't be thinking of keeping that too, would you? If not, why not get rid of them as a pair?
I had a 70 that had factory V-8 and glide. They were common behind V-8's in the cars as well. Prior to 66, they even had a rear pump, so would build pressure without the engine running, but those aren't strong enough to take the abuse the racers give them.
I have no intentions of keeping it. The neighbor is rebuilding me a TH350 for the truck. He was just going to scrap it unless I wanted to keep it. It is going behind a 350 that I am currently building up.
It was behind the 350 that I am building up for the truck, but I am certain it is not the original one as the shift lever has "P R 3 L2 L1" on it.
I think I am just going to put it on Ebay and see what come about. Worst case senario, I waste some time and end up scrapping the tranny. Besides, I have several other duplicate parts for my project truck (72 chevy) so it would be a good taste to see if I want to sell the extra parts on ebay or hit a swap meet.
You've got some pretty good swap meets up that way, and those parts are in demand. Speaking of which, a friend of mine has need for a cab, maybe the box too. email or pm me if it is worth selling.(the spare)
