Laptops

I was thinking about getting myself one. Just wondering, if I'd take it out on the road with me, do you have to run them through a cell phone or what? Do they drop connections when moving? Also I would assume they are slow like dial-up when surfing the net???
Any help would be great.

Yes it would be as slow as dial-up if you're using a cell phone for connecting.

If you stop along your travels at places that have WiFi access points you can get broadband speeds. http://www.wififreespot.com/ Of course you will need a laptop with WiFi built-in or a WiFi card (PCMIA).
