F250 purchasing help....

Hi all... New to the board here...
I Cant decide between these 4 trucks..

All of these are crewcab Lariats.
The first is a 2003 4x2 with the 5.4 for $25k... (has 54k miles)
The second is a 2002 4x2 with the PSD for $25k..(has 83k miles, but mint)
The third is a 2001 4x4 with the V10..(has 54k miles)

The 4th is a XLT 4x2 crewcab with the V10 for $18,500..(has 48k miles)
( I really like the Lariat trim though)

Anyway, I currently drive a 94 F150 ext cab with the 5.7 and 4:56 rear gears.. I tow a 7000lb TT about 10 -12 times a year and a 5500lb cargo trailer at work maybe 8 times per year. The rest of the time I do alot of driving around to different job sites....

Please state which one you would choose and why based on my needs...

Also, how much power and MPG is lost with a 4x4 VS a 4x2?
Is non-use just as bad as overuse with a 4 wheel drive system?
I dont really "need" a 4 wheel drive, but I cant seem to find a crewcab in Lariat trim with the V10 in a 4x2....

Anyway, thanks for your help and input....

I'd take the PSD. It will get better mileage than the other 2 engines and obviously you have found one for the same price as the 5.4. The 4x2 will also get better mileage.

Indeed, the PSD is my choice. Nice and broken in at 86K, and it's a Lariat. More power for the gallon fuel. Easier maintenance. Easy call, even with that extra 30K miles the other trucks don't have.

There's a reason why the same truck a year older with a diesel and 83K miles costs the same as one a year newer with 54K miles and a gasser. You tow enough to make the PSD a good choice.

4X vs 2X: The PSD is a 2X, better mileage, cheaper long term, and your profile says you live in FL. Doubt you'll miss 4X.

I would go with the 4x4 V10. 5.4L is too small for these trucks, the V10 makes good power. 4x4 is one thing you will wish you had when you didn't get it, and they look better. I have never replaced any part of a 4wd system except U-joints, repair costs shoudn't factor in your decision. Power Stroke is great but I wouldn't get one in 2 wheel drive.

Above all stay away from the 5.4L.

Umm - is there a 4x4 PSD choice?? Seriously though - for what you are looking to do with the rig and where you live - my choice would have to be the PSD. I've had my diesel for 2 years now and I don't think that I will ever go back to a gasser. It will tow anything you want to, with ease, and still get better milage than either of the other gas rigs. Good luck with the decisions!!

The 03 will be totally under powered w/ the 5.4 ... you'll be doing 25 in the shoulder lane up any grade.

the V-10 2wd will get about 14mpg, and v-10 4wd maxs out at 12 (I know, I had one). They both will pull well though, with plenty of power. However the milagge on both is getting a little long in the tooth.

Which brings us to the PSD, which should see about 17-18 unloaded, pull the 5.4 & the trailer up hill @ 65 nicely, and is just getting broken in. Plus, you can use biodiesel in it, which is good for the engine, environment & economy. You didn't mention trannies, so I'll assume autos. In any of these, you're going to want to get some gauges to monitor temps, & consider additional trans cooling, if you're towing much.

Now one more thing to consider - a new 6.0 w/ the torqueshift (I have a 6spd Manual). This is a towing machine!!

The PSD as stated above better mpg and plenty of power. My next one is going to be a PSD

Thanks for the quick replies...
Now, if any of you all were in the market, would any of you hesitate on purchasing an '02 F250 diesel crewcab 4x2 with 83k miles for $25k??? The truck is close to mint...

I would look at the Classified ads here on this site. I would buy the 01 F250 4X4 CC in Mississippi for $18,000 with 4" lift new 35's 4:56 gears (+) and new trans. Save $7,000 and you "could" replace the very good running (140,000 mile) 5.4 for about 2,000 and have an all new drive-train.

(It's worth a try!)

darek, IMHO, I think the price is too high. But if you're happy with it, go for it.
