My 97 Explorer's 4.0 L. sohc problem is the engine appears to shut down, stumble, hesitate for a spilt second then recover. It is also intermittent and does this one to two minutes. It appears to be more pronounced at highway speeds. It's like someone turned a switch off to the engine for a split second then turned it on just as quick. With the cruise on the tach jumps up and down to maintain the preset speed.
Here is a list of things I have changed.
Fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, crank sensor. throttle position sensor. PCM module (used).
I put a node light on one of the injectors and drove it. The light flickers and some times goes out for a split second.
One thing that is strange is if you rev up the engine and hold rpm's at 2,000 with the truck in park the node light shows the injectors working perfectly. It only does this when the truck is driving.
Could the VSS sensor be the problem. (The speedometer does not jump around.) I have some people tell me it might be a bad injector but wouldn't it show up when revving up the engine in park? Thanks for any ideas.
I have taken the coil pack off and re-installed. Everything seems tight. The coil pack is the only thing I haven't changed. The weird part is when I take it for a ride with the node light connected to one of the injector connectors the signal flickers then dies for a split second then comes on bright again. This concides with the serges and shut off pattern. Thanks Again.
Sip.
I just had the Explorer checked out by a shop. They traced the problem to the speed sensor in the transfer case. It appears there is something wrong in side the transfer case causing the speed sensor to give a false signal back to the PCM. My next stop is to pull the transfer case and have a look inside. Any tips? What I can gather it's a Borg Warner 4405 but not 100% sure.
Thanks Sip
