I just bought a 93 4x4 with an Eod4 and a push button transfer case(forgive me for not knowing the model). My question is how do I get the damn thing in neutral. Transfer case neutral comes in handy once in a while and I didn't get a manual with it, so whats the trick? I'm sure it's simple and i'm a bonehead, but help me out
The electric cases don't have a neutral position, you're either in 2wd or 4wd or 4lo. At least that's the way it is on the Ranger. If you push both at the same time you'll just go into 4 low.
I prefer manual transfer cases. The electric are ALWAYS having issues with the solenoids not functioning right. It's a shame that they've done away with the good old fashioned reliable stuff.
I sometimes have a problem with my arm being lazy, but that's not Ford's fault.
Downhillfast, I would recommend getting a couple extra solenoids and keeping them handy so when yours fry you can swap them quickly without being stranded. They tend to die on you at the most inopportune times. It is too bad you can't put that case in neutral, being that the tranny is an auto.
thanks for the help guys. I'll have to pick up a solenoid. I'm used to my old Jeep where everything is manual, all this electric stuff is kinda foriegn to me. Thats kinda stupid that there isn't a neutral position at all. So basically my only option for flat towing is convert to manual hubs and drop the rear driveshaft, what a total pain in the butt. Thanks Ford engineers.....for NOTHING!!!! ANyway, thanks for the answer, I think I'll go back to my Jeep now.
Sorry I didn't have better news for you but reality is that all new trucks are going to electronic junk. The good news is your Ford will be reliable enough that you won't have to tow it . . . that Jeep on the other hand . . . Sorry, just had to.
