Trying to change out my fuel filter, I got that stupid wrench for the fittings but they won't budge. Ended up pulling out the little metal toothed thing from inside the gas tank side hose. That side is off, still can't get the engine side off. I went to Ford parts dept. today and you can't replace toothed thing. You gotta buy the whole freakin hose! What should I do now? Thought about cutting the hoses off and buying new hose and CLAMPS but I don't know what to do about the areas where the fuel hose becomes the metal hose. Oh by the way 1996 Ford Bronco EB 5.8L 351.
I had the same thing done to mine during a free 'minor tune-up' last year at the grand opening of the big hoopty MAJOR FRANCHISE car wash place. The dudes used the wrong wrench and stripped out the 'cage' that locks down on the filter. The stealership can replace one for less than the cost of a new line. (Mine was free since it was damaged for me) Or you can do it yourself for pretty cheap. FYI, next time, get the SNAP-ON part wrench that specifically is designed for that line. It's red colored aluminum and is indestructible. It works perfectly. You can order one from their website. Pretty cheap and is what the good ford techs use.
You dont use a wrench to disconnect the fuel filter on a 96. You need to use a special plastic tool which slides up inside the connection and releases it. A set of 4 or 5 different sizes should be available for a few dollars at any auto parts store. Be aware that the fuel line will be under pressure.
Speaking of fuel pressure, what is the proper procedure to relieve the fuel pressure when changing the filter. I read that you need another special tool to relieve it at the Schrader Valve. Is that correct, what is the tool called and where can I obtain one? Thanks
If you have EFI, there should be a switch in the cab against the firewall on the drivers side. I believe you will have to simply pull up the button to relieve the pressure. Once you do that, start up the truck till it sputters and dies. The pressure should then be low enough for you to take out the old filter. Some gas will still spill out, so be prepared. Once done, push the button down again, start your truck and go to Taco Bell to celebrate.
well matthewc the switch you are talking about is the inertia switch. its purpose is so when you get in an accident it cuts power to the fuel pump so fuel cant be pumped all over the place if a line gets broke. you cant just pull this button up it has to feel a hard impact to release itself.then you can reset it by pressing it back in. the correct way to relieve rail pressure is by using the schrader valve on the rail.
You are absolutely right, however the method I had described is do-able. I have done this before, and it does work. If you own a Haynes manual, you will find this procedure described in detail.
