Hello,
I have been having trouble with my check engine light and power loss for over a yr now. I have cleaned the MAF and replaced the egr valve. After I have been driving a bit the car will get sluggish, unresponsive and then surge. I have heard of this before but can't seem to get a straight answer on what the problem is.
My explorer is an eddie bauer with 150,000 on it.
Also, my drivers door switches have failed. Seems the contacts are worn and do not work as well as new. I can take it apart, spray with silicone and then they will work for a week or so. Does anyone know a way to fix these without buying new from dealer? Or a place to buy them other than ford?
Has anyone given you the engine codes that are triggering the check engine light? that would go a long way in getting the right diagnosis. Otherwise, we are somewhat guessing. If you don't have the codes, it's easy to get them with an analog voltmeter and a jumper wire.
Someone in the BII forum posted this link that describes the test procedure. A Haynes or Chilton's manual usually contains the test procedure as well.

Also, you can use the check engine light instead of the voltmeter.
Just count flashes instead of meter swings.
The other question about the switches - yes you can probably repair them yourself it you are willing to take them completely apart. I have done this with good success. The switches are clipped together, I believe, and have internal springs, so be careful and watch how they are assembled, and don't lose any small pieces. Once disassembled, use fine grit paper to burnish each contact surface. Then apply silicon grease to the contacts.
Don't be concerned about the silicone - the contacts will squeeze it out where they touch each other, and the grease will help keep air/moisture out -thus making the repair job last longer.
My check engine light came on and I took it to the dealer for my 1998 Ford Explorer Sport. There is a recall for some air intake valve going to the fuel system that they replaced for free. My Explorer runs much better now. Hope this helps. Matt
