Navigation un-usable when moving?

I know some people say its a safety issue but i say let me decide that. The
fact that even the passenger cant do a search for food or gas while driving is
abssurd!

Does anyone know if anyone has figured out how to bypass this moranity?

I was thinking of cutting the speed sensor to it so it thinks im stopped but it might base it on reading from the gps feed.

Any other ideas out there?

I also dont feel like spending 3k to reinstall a pioneer or alpine navigation unit.

What features are you NOT able to do while moving? I have a 2004 navigation system and I am able to select a destination while moving. I have never tried doing a search but I will do so tonight.

I don't know about the unit that comes with the vehicle, but in the default mode with the GPS that I have (Garmin 2610) many things like searching, setting routes etc is locked out while the unit is moving.

With the Garmin, you can turn it off from the setup menu and I have done so...

However... unless you are real familar with your unit, I would highly suggest you stay away from most of that if you can and let the passenger deal with it.

My unit comes with a remote control which makes dealing with it much easier, but it can be very distracting even at that.

I just did a 3500 mile road trip and the GPS was a great assist on the trip. It helped find gas stations, a Dennys (my son wanted Dennys one day), many fast food resturants, a couple relatives that I would never have found, Target, Walmart onlong the route and a Ford Dealer.

I don't know how I traveled without it. In fact, when we got home, I took the unit out (it is portable) and the next day went back to the house to put it back in because I couldn't find the nearest Lowes without it.

Before the trip I practiced with it for more than a month though so I was very comfortable with how it worked, what I could do and how to do it.

Attempting many of the functions without the remote however, I would not even attempt since it is very distracting.

I appreciate the concern but a passenger would be the one searching. Hence the need to be able to use all the functions as are availible while stopped.

I have the Garmin Streetpilot 3 which lets you do whatever you want while moving, im glad i didnt upgrade to the 2610 if it cant be used while moving.

Think about it for a minute... what is the point of a navigation unit if you cannot find things you want while navigating?

Or i should say how VERY inconvienient.

If you have to stop to search then what do you need the navigation at all? You could ask your pitiful gas station attendee where the local Denny's is when you stop.

I did find a way to do it though.

You simply need to cut the speed sensor cable on the back of the unit and put a switch in between.

This way the switch is clicked and the nav unit thinks your not moving so you can input the whatever you wanted to find.

Then switch back and it will figure out where you are again and find what you wanted.

Ill post the wire color as soon as i find it.

BTW i found this cool site that lets you use the factory navigation unit as a tv without cutting any wires. (At least i dont think you do, but dont quote me on it)

Yes i realize its the aviator but you get the picture (pun intended!)

The 2610 can be changed via the menu to allow all functions while driving. The default from the factory is that it is in restricted mode.

SD Navi:

Did you ever find the wire color for the speed sensor that would permit the insertion of a switch to trick the system into thinking you are not moving??

If so, have you (or anyone else) done this mod to confirm that it actually works as expected??

Thanks.
