1999 Ford Explorer Computer

I have read that disconnecting the battery so the computer re-learns driving habits is mentioned sometimes. What does this actually do. I do not have any problems with my explorer but bought it used about 1 month ago. It is a 1999 with 19,000 miles on it. Got a good deal and I really like it! Would it make sense to disconnect the battery so it re-learns my driving habits and doesn't use the people's before me that had it??? Just wondering. I just didn't really understand how it all works. Thanks!!!!

I would not erase the computer memory unless there is a problem. The data stored helps control the idle speed and several other runability factors. If it is erased, it will have to be re-learned, and it will not run as smoothly until that is accomplished.

I would buy or borrow a code scanner and check for any stored codes. If there are none, then do nothing. If some codes are stored, clear them and check again in a few days. You can clear the codes with the scanner, thus preserving the drivability info that the computer has learned.
