Why is my speedometer bouncing back and forth?
65 F100
It happened all of a sudden. Now while going highway speeds, it sweeps back and forth over a 30-40 mph range. Speedo cable going out? Thanks

Try lubing the cable first and if this doesn't cure the problem, you have to lube the speedo head itself. They sometimes bind. Where the cable threads on the speedo, just in front of the threaded part, there's a small brass plug. Carefully remove and there's a felt wick in there to absorb a few drops of oil. Use WD 40 or 3 in 1 oil. Make sure you put the brass plug back in to keep the dirt out. It's best to remove the cluster from the dash to do this.

Also check the cable housing, especially where it may run close to the exhaust. If the outer casing gets melted, kinked or cut, it can interfere with the proper rotation of the speedometer cable. This happened on my son's '72.

Great post! I just had mine start the same thing today! It used to be so steady I could tell for sure how fast I was speeding and now I have to guess. Is there a liquid graphite recommendation out there instead of 3-in-1 or WD40? My experience with WD40 is that after the solvents dry up it becomes a little gummy and needs frequent reapplications.
