Give it some time to get the answers coming in man! I don't know how to help you, but have you tried just a basic tuneup? I'm sure you have, but if you haven't you'd be surprised by what it can do.
Oh and the ticking noise. Mine does that too when it's cold and I'm accelerating. After it warms up you can hear it just a little bit at times, not much. You can really hear this tick on motors without much of a muffler. I hear plenty of Fords doing this tick and I don't know what makes them tick(LOL, ) but a lot of them do it.
Yeah, I can relate to that. Some questions aren't so easy to answer. So, have you done a tuneup? Make sure the timing is right, I think that motor should not have adjustable timing anyway, but check to make sure. Another thing, check for a vacum leak. Those can screw things up. Now, if it only misses at idle, that must be something in the ignition. I wish I could help you some more.
Oh yeah, how do you stop that ticking noise????????
Pipercub,
thanks for the reply.I did change my timing.About 5 times.Move it and drive it move it and drive it.Trying to get rid of that ticking.I figured with 170,000 miles the timing chain may be stretched and give a false reading.Moving the timing only made it hesitate ,and moving it the oppisite way made the valves rattle.I put it back where I started and it run fine.
I have not changed plugs& wires or cap& rotor.Bought the truck in April and the previous owner said he just had it done.I figued if it was a plug or wire it would miss all the time.I am thinking a sensor or something or a vacum leak that I can not find!
Thanks again.
That ticking is ticking me off!!LOL
jbjb, i'm assuming you've already done the standard tuneup?
This miss you describe...listen closely when it does it. Do you hear a hard tick just before the RPMs drop? Mine does the same. So far I've tracked it down to the smog pump kicking in and out. I'm not sure what that means exactly, but I've sat under the hood and witnessed it.
Anyone have any guesses?
The ticking is probably the notorious Ford valve tap. Probably a bad lifter.
Ah, who knows? A bunch of mechanical parts all turned into one working together off and on, something is bound to go wrong. Old trucks are old trucks I guess.
The tick is probably just an exhaust manifold, I would do a full tune up, plugs, wires, cap,, rotor, ignition module (spend some money on true motorcraft parts, dealer if you have to.), and O2 sensor(s). You would be surprised a the difference that can make.
So you think that tick could be caused by 87? That tick sounds like more of a pinging. These trucks were made to be ran on 87. Maybe you should get yours checked out. 93 really cost a lot more to fill up, maybe you could try some of the octane boost stuff too.
