A4LD cold ship problems

I own a 1994 Ford Ranger Auto trans (A4LD) with o-drive. its only does it when its cold, the transmission will not shift out of 1st until it gets hot, usually about a half mile down the road. plus other problems so i had the tranny rebuilt. Still no shift when cold. I had it redone again, still no shif when cold. Changed govenor, throttle assembly, cleaned out metal fragments. Still no shift when cold or when it sits overnight. Finally went back to the shop and had an entire new unit(used), rebuild that one and still NO shift when cold. MY friend that owns the shop and says he has NEVER seen such a mess. He is stumped. what could be missing? could it be the fluid? Are there and exterior items that could influence shifting? Actually the first time it was rebuild he said ther was metal back in the pan and something wa tearing it up. the second time he said there was metal in the pan again. Although this time we think that the problem is fixed with the new unit. still no shift when cold. can the flywheel be messed up? the crankshaft? at our wits end here and can't find anybody with answers other than telling me to go to court. please don't tell me to go to court, the guy is my friend and did it for next to nothing. I do wish i would have taken it to the dealer or something. Any answers to get me right???

flywheel and crankshaft have nothing to do with transmission shifting.

question for you.
did you check or replace vacuum modulator?
are you having vacuum to the modulator all the time? [ cold and hot ]
what do you mean throttle assmebly? you mean valve body?
metal in pan after each trans rebuilding? did you or builder flush the trans cooler line thoroughly?

kwikford yes, i did just replace the vacuum modulator and acually i just copyed and pasted the paragraph from a diferent forum. i have the same trouble with my own so i thought i would see if anyone could help me here. I know what you are saying about the throttle ***. i think the person meant valve body too. i haven't yet had to get the transmission rebuilt becaust it preforms just fine when it warms up, only when its cold does it not shift.

really sounds like the seals {o rings } are hardened inside the tranny and the servo piston seal is worn...try the servo first
