just yesterday out of no where my truck[1971 ford 3/4 ton v8 camper special]
acted like it was starving for gas so i let it sit for ten minutes, and it would start again, and go two or three blocks and then act like its out of gas again, i repeated this process about four or five times to get a couple miles back to home. oh yeah and it was raining yeterday so i thought maybe my points got wet or something but same prob today, so now i'm thinking of changing my fuel filter and fuel pump but i'm broke and i dont want to wast money,
any advice thank you
Did you check your carburater? make sure gas is going trough and your choke aint closing. I had the same problem with mine, it was the choke it would get stok.
well i disconnected the choke but it didnt work
now i'm going to try the fuel filter, do i have to take the
power steering pump off to get to the fuel pump?
You should still be able to get to the fuel pump from underneath the truck. You'll need a small oil filter wrench to spin the canister off the bottom of the pump. Be careful not to crush the canister.
I'd be willing to bet your coil is going out. A coil will heat up, slowly start shorting out inside, making it miss and eventually quit. Then when it cools off, you can start it again and run good until it reaches that magic hot point. Eventually, it will go all the way out and you won't go no where.
right after i got my f150,i had the same problem test driving, had dual tanks, the sending unit on the frame rail was switching between the empty rear tank, and the 1/2 full front tank, ended up bypassing this unit until i got a new part,if so,remember to disconnect battery first...good luck..t rux
If you don't test anything you end up with a box of old good used parts.
Until you do the home work. >Truck stops check gas in carb or spray alittle
quick start in air filter tube and crank it up, if starts up and you can keep it running by spraying in the tube (gas troubles) If didn't start pull plug wire and test for spark. Look for loose wires on coil in the dist.(I see you didn't post the yr of your truck. You may have the dura-spark system and that has a square box about 4''x4''x1 1/2'' on the right side of the engine, looking at the eng. That could be your troubles. No gas pull the gas line at pump or at carb and check for gas volume flow when cranking it over. ((BUTyou must remove the coil wire)) So it does not start up on you. Use a rubber hose to catch the gas in to a can to see how much gas come in to the can after cranking it for about 15 sec. it should be around 1/3 cup plus. If lest (check filter) if good pull line from tank check gas flow maybe crap in tank. If good then Fuel Pump..Do check coil because thats what they do also..Like earlyer post said!
hope this help you in some way. my 2cents
orich
well i may have lucked out this time i started with the
fuel filter, pulled it out and saw a bunch of junk in it,
so i got a new one and replaced the old brital gas lines,
and i made it all the way to work without breaking down
i thank everybody very much for there input
i did check a couple of other things like the coil wires witch seemed to be a little loose
Some time ago, I replaced pump with Holley red pump. Make sure you install filter between gas tank and pump, not pump and carb. I've never liked those "itty bitty" filters in the carb/gas line connection.
