Post Big problem-need help !!!!

1997 rollback w/7.3 power stroke and 4 speed with o.d. While driving the check engine light will come on and the engine will lose all power. SOMETIMES if you down shift you will get power back, other times you need to put into neutral and step on gas pedal. Crank sensor and map sensor replaced. This problem may not appear for a week or so OR it may happen every day. Can't keep putting truck out of service so I NEED HELP PLEASE !!!

Sounds like losing fuel to me. Have you checked the fuel filter lately?
The other thing it could be is badly corroded grounds on the engine and/or batteries. Electronically controlled engines require a good clean power supply to run properly.

Does it happen when you're pulling hard? The engine has an overboost code set into the map sensor that defuels on top when you're gettin' on it or pulling something. I have a 97 too that did that, it'd just plain quit, i'd have to shut it off and restart it. Got pretty good at doing it in Neutral on the highway as I was rollin' but it was a pain. The problem is in the EBPS which is located on the left side of the hpop (looking at engine) under the black PSD cover. It sticks straight up and is easy to see with the cover removed. See this ebay item number 7911478225 , it's a cheap fix as compared to the part from the stealership. Good luck, I've got a very hot chip with exhaust, intake and all the other goodies with an upgraded turbo and since I put it on I haven't seen the light, it just plain hauls butt.

Easy sollution, since the engine light comes on...it has had to have put an error code into the computer. Just get someone to hook it up to a computer and see what codes you come up with. That should get rid of the guessing work.

Mine did this, lost 60% or more of the power. It would up being the wiring harness under the valve cover to the front two injectors / glow plugs. I replaced the valve cover gasket and harness and it has been fine for three years. When the short shows up the PCM shuts down that bank of cylinders so you are running a 3.65 litre diesel powering a 3.65 litre air compressor.

Just something else to check into.
