My 1995 explorer has 130,000 miles on it. a month or so ago the check engine ligth started to come on but only after driving on the highway for a while now it comes on after being in the car for 5 minutes and pretty much stays on. i bought a code reader and the codes were 332 and 176 egr and hego always lean, tell me what this means. I have had people tell me i may not have to replace these parts.
code 176 HEGO always lean - no switching detected -- The computer monitors the HEGO to determine whether the engine is running rich or lean and adjusts the fuel/air mixture accordingly. This code is set when the computer sees that the engine is running lean (low HEGO voltage) and can't adjust the mixture such that the HEGO sensor indicates rich (high HEGO voltage). This can be caused by 1) a bad HEGO sensor. 2) A bad connection between the HEGO sensor and the computer - the HEGO is good, but the computer can't "talk" to the sensor. 3) Another problem in air intake/fuel delivery that causes the engine to always run lean. 4) A fault in the computer such that the computer can no longer "talk" to the sensor (I had a car do this to me.)
code 332 EGR opening not detected -- computer didn't see the egr valve open because 1) the egr valve is bad and didn't open. 2) the PFE or DPFE sensor that the computer uses to tell when the egr valve is open is bad. 3) bad electrical connection to either of these components.
