Some months ago I wrote about grinding noises from the front end while
turning in 4wd mode. Well I was told that is normal ie: wheels turning
at different speed. I have now noticed that when I make a hard left
(in AUTO mode)turn it makes a wierd "grinding" sound. The thing that bugs me is hat the front end doesn't do anything wierd, no shaking, no unusual pulling to the left.I noticed the "noise's" when I went to
Bridestone Dueller A/T's. Is the noise just my imanignation(sp) or
maybe it's the tire noise? The dealer's mechanic still say's it the
Transfer Case. This is my first Explorer. Thanks for any info.
Raise the vehicle ,grab the tire top and botton and try and move the tire ,by pushing in at the top and pulling out at the bottom .if you can you have a bad wheel bearing and hubassy. This is what I think you have1
There should be no play at all. these are sealed units ,that are lubed for life ,so to speak.

If it's any consolation, my 98 makes a grinding noise too, turning either direction but only if I turn it to the extreme. I figured it had something to do w/ the PS box and basically haven't worried much about it -ive got a ton of other stuff to worry about w/ this truck, and the grinding noise just doesn't rise to the top of the priority list.
Guys & gals,
I just read on another topic about a lady taking her Explorer and
having some work done. She had stated that after alignment that she
was getting a "thumping" sound, well I realized that I didn't notice
my "sound" until after I had new tires & alignment done. Is this a
coincindence(sp)? IS this the reason the mechanic can't find anything
wrong? Do I have "bent" parts? Thanks for any info. This Explorer is
a nice "truck" & I'd like to keep it awhile, I only put 7800 +/- mi's
a year on it.
I am having what seems to be the same problem. I wanted to refresh the topic to see if anyone has found the fix for this problem. I dont want to go drop 2 bills on a hub assembly and not be the fix.
The problem is when I turn left at a slow speed (probably when I can hear it the most) there is a grinding sound like a warped rotor. I jacked it up and the tire moves in all directions, up, down, left, right. All the bushings look good. I am going to dig into it this weekend and was looking for ideas before I get in deep.
