Red face Cheap bookcase rant

I have 4 bookcases that I bought some time ago at an office supply. The kind that looks like a thousand bucks in the store. Of course they are particle board with a fake wood finish. They have adjustable shelves with pegs in the ends that made me go hmmmn when I assembled them.

I go into my library/spare bedroom yesterday and the 3rd from the bottom shelve broke. That took out the one below it. Now I have to unload them and re-assemble with screws.

This is a perfect example of the old saying "When you buy quality, the higher price is soon forgotten".

Sorry about the bookcase. My grandpa always said he hated that particle board.

My library is the bathroom.

Gotta love that "bic board" furniture.

What office supply store did you buy them from?

A few weeks ago I saw some cheap bookcases in out local Canadian Tire store. They didnt even have fake wood on the outside. It looked more like they glued pictures of wood on. Man it looked bad!

IMO furnature is the most expensive/worst quality item (that is a large/expensive item, theres probably worse less expensive things) able to be purchased. My parents just bought a $3000 dinning room set and within a month one of the arm rests of the chair came off the peg it sat on. It looks nice but its dang hard to find quality furnature, regardless of price.

That's why I like that Home Depot / Rigid commercial:
"I thought if you got the power tools, your wife got a new dining room set."
"Yup."
"So, where's the furniture?"
"You're standing on it."
As the first guy looks down at a pile of raw lumber.

And its PT pine no less. Ma's dining room set is going to be a pinic table. I have always had a desire to build furniture and thought if I could get a few power tools I could do it. Well, I can today, but thats 20 years and about $15K worth of tools later.

I dunno.... I've always liked making furniture. Unfortunatly, with the current prices of specialty timber, its pretty spendy to justify it.

I recently built a gun cabinet out of pure white Aspen, I had $150 in materials, and over 75 hours into the project. I would expect to be paid at least $14/hour for labor (I know, I'm cheap) and who in their right mind would pay $1100 for a no frills gun cabinet.

I agree with you Mattsbox99. I make my own furniture and cabinets too. The cost of the materials is a tad high, but you can't buy anything close in quality. 75 hours for a gun cabinet sounds about right to me. Most of my projects, like a entertainment cabinet, take about three months of evenings and weekends to complete. I don't often build for others anymore, I ask for $20 per hour and materials. The only estimate I give is the price of materials, the labour is whatever it takes. This keeps the riff-raff away, besides, I've got a truck restoration to do! ...Terry

It wasn't something I threw together, I biscuited every board, in 6 places, surface sanded every piece until it was perfect, cut blind dadoes at ever joint, biscuited through those joints, and cut blind dadoes for the cross joist. There isn't one nail in the whole thing, and the only glue is where two sides come together, the biscuits hold perfectly tight, and the heat from surface sanding melted the biscuit glue so it won't ever come apart. I didn't stain it any colors, or do any decorative scrolling, its looks pretty good like it is. It will hold 9 long guns (up to 56") and eight handguns on the shelves on the doors.

I like my truck, but I enjoy woodworking a lot more...

I enjoy making furniture, just out of steel and aluminum instead. I am making a coffee table now, a nice little V-12 engine with the four corner pistons popped up to hold up a piece of glass. Definitely a lot lighter than having a cast iron V-8 sitting there.
I also made a corner book shelf out of 3/4" angle with wood shelves. I saw one sitting in a high-end furniture store for about $500, so I made one.

I also enjoy making furniture by myself. Book selfs, our bed, three terrariums, my desk and so on.....
The bad part: You`ll need much space for making them and I don't have enough.
