need prognosis

hi guys, im finally fed up with my father's 84 bronco. To him its his midlife crisis mobile (dont know why). This thing has major electrical problems. The only time it starts is when it is a cool morning. Any other time he has to put it in neutral and roll down the hill, pop it in second, and it starts. Then it runs not great but drivable. Then when he gets home and turns it off it makes big noise like....i dont know....not a backfire...more like air is coming through carb. the wrong way. I really dont know whats wrong with ole' mud slinger. We had a engine garage give him a new block and man they screwed us over. The ran like crap. I think the header heats up the starter and thats why is dosent start, but the pther things i dont know. sry i cant give you much and sry that i didnt take the time to use the "search". timing off?

that sounds right, check the timing, that is prob causing the noise on shut down. get the timing set good then go over the carb settings, this should help it. you can never get a carb set up properly if the timing is off.

Sounds like the timing is too far advanced... that will cause hard starting on a hot engine, backfiring and dieseling (run on after engine shutdown) due to excessive combustion chamber heat. Also, it can cause the engine to run like fecies.

i had a mechanic do a "two minute prognosis" just cuz he happened to be picking up another vehicle from our house and he said the timing was really advanced and he messed with the distributer. he couldnt get it to do anything better by messeing wit the distributor. is it the camshaft that is advanced?

Most probably. Doing the timing gears on these is not that hard. It would certainly be worth checking. Or even replacing them if it has been a large # of miles.....

You can also see if the distributor lines up without going that far.
hold your thunb (or a pressure guage) over the #1 cylinder
crank engine BY HAND (not using the starter) until you feel pressure build up. The timing mark should now be at TDC.

The rotor should point to the #1 plug wire on the distributor.

This does not sell tou if the Cam is not lined up to the Crank..... But it does check the distributor....

another thing that happens is that when you try to start the motor hot (it dosent start and dosent turnover)(its not the starter) you burn a selanoid on the engine bay wall and the wire that connects to it gets red hot. input plz!

The red hot wire is usually a bad battery combined with a starter getting hot. I agree your base problem is most likely a timing issue. The hedder is heating up the starter windings and causing a high current draw off the battery in turn the battery voltage goes down and the current goes up - that's what gives the red hot cable to the starter.

It looks like two problems - Timing and starter - you can get a heat shield for the starter - timing problems have to be worked out.

On my Ford. The starter was bad and would turn the truck over 2 times then start slowing down and quit on the 4th turnover and make the wire from the solinoid to the starter VERY hot to the point it would smoke. New starter = solved.

one of two things are happening with the starter if not both... the starter is getting cooked by headers.... or the flywheel is chewing them up.....
