I have a 91 Explorer that will not pull 4,000 lb boat and trailer up long steep ramp. The truck gets it about ½ way before I stop put the boat back into the water and switch the trailer to wife’s Mazda MPV it pulls it out fine.
The truck is a 91 with 220 K miles with a rebuilt transmission. The truck goes to about 2500 rpm and moves boat out of water but is so slow moving the boat up the ramp something is wrong. I have changed the fuel filter, and Plugs and wires (the plugs look like the truck is running lean). The compression in all 6 cylinders is 150. Does anyone have any suggestion what may be wrong?
Are you SURE the transmission is in 1st gear when trying to pull it out of water? Did you put the lever in D1 and try it that way?
I have had some experience with the A4LD auto and there is a centrifigal valve in the tailshaft that controls 1-2 upshift and 2-1 downshift based on tailshaft rotational speed. It can stick and transmission will start out in 2nd gear at times. This condition is generally not too noticeable on flat ground with no load other than vehicle weight. If you find this is indeed the problem, there was an earlier post in this forum about correcting it.

I had an A4LD in a Bronco II that wouldn't pull itself up a hill, let alone a trailer. The A4LD (LD = Light Duty) is a notoriously weak transmission, very prone to slippage and wear. I suggest you either get a new tranny or get a 95 or newer Explorer. They use a different tranny...

Sorry, but same type of transmission, more electronics and programming to get a different name, ie 4r44e,4r55e,5r55e.
newer is not always new and better!!!!
I appreciate all the help. I went back and looked at the gearing in the back end. I did not realize that the explorer used a 3.08 my 93 had a 3.73 which I used to pull my old boat that was much heaver. I am going to change the gear to a 3.73. Not the best solution but the cheapest.

if this is a 4x4 you have to change the front gear too!
Just in case you didn't know that
even with a 3.08 gear it still should have pulled that boat out.

Most trucks only have 3.08 gears in them and they pull weight well with 6 cylinders. I bet changing the gear will have little effect and if it does, it will only hide your tranny problem until the thing gives out completely. I'd save the gear change money and buy a NEW tranny...
