oil in intake

well today i went out and checked the air aleaner on my 87 6.9L when i got it off i noticed it was black in the intake and it was oil, someone on here told me theres a DCV valve or something like that that could be plugged, would this have anything to do with it useing a quart of oil every 100 miles, anyone have any ideas why theres oil in the intake and what that valve is and where its at, im new to diesels, thanks

yes it would its a cdr valve( or what you may call pcv valve on a gas motor) you should run it through a parts cleaner every 10,000 miles. although this will not make it stop but it will help the engine from getting any extra wear.

hummm.... i took it off and cleaned it with parts cleaner to where it looked like new and put it back on, it still does the same thing, i talked to a local mechanic and he said thw rings are prolly worn out and its causeing blow by and pushing oil through it, he told me to start it and take out the oil fill plug and see how much air came out of it, i did this and yes more than usual air comes out of it, is my motor getting wore out or what, i really dont think it can be wore out, theres 157,000 miles on it and 6.9's usually last a lot longer than that plus the motor runs great and pulls great i just cant see that it that the rings can be worn out, maybe i should do a compression test, can someone tell what i need and how i do the compression test and what each cylinder should test, thanks again.

My crank case vents pretty good too I would worry about it it seems to be a commen problem. Maybe you may want a new cdr valve($45 at the international truck dealer check the ford part number first).I would not buy one Its a (kind of a one way valve) spring that holds the crank case presure in til it over comes it and shoves oil in to the intake clean it out allow it to close better. If you really don't like it plug the hole in the back of the intake manifold. run a hose off the valley pan hole to a spot that it it will not burn on the exhaust or get the truck all oily and check the oil every couple thousand miles(I did this with the new motor) it will leak on ground from this tube but I figure better there than in the intake of the motor.

well yea it would be better than dumping the oil into the intake and causeing it to burn and smoke out the exhaust pipes, maybe even put the hose in a can or something so it doesnt run out on the road/driveway, i would only do this temporary till i get the money to rebuild it, thanks for the advice. obtw i took the decompression valve off again tonight and cleaned it and also cleaned the breather in the valve cover so more crankcase pressure would get released, it actually helped a bit.

I do know that there is a crank case breather bolted on the back of the intake manifold of the 7.3 but I don't know if it is the same set up. I have had oil blow through an old one and into the intake.

Its on all the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI(I have owned them both with the same truck) motors just not in the same spot for international trucks compared to ford trucks

a local machine shop told me, i have to much crankcase pressure from worn out rings causeing it to blow oil out that valve from all the pressure, so i thought well maybe if i can find some way to let more crankcase pressure out, i can help it from burning so much oil. so, i bought a new valve cover breather, ordered the valve behind the intake "not here yet" and drilled a small hole in the oil fill plug. believe it or not, it decreased exhaust smoke as well as less oil consumption, i hope it will be even better after i get that new valve in.
