when i am going from Maine to fl. i weigh about 21,200 lb. 355 gears kind of high, manual tranney, I can run 65 in 4 gear at 2400 rpm, will it hurt anything if i drive 1500 miles in 4 gear and never put it in 5? 5 rpm 65 is only 17 to 1800 rpm. I know i need lower gears, but when not towing i get great fuel milage 28 to 30 mpg. not to good when towing in 4 though.12 / 14 but i am very heavy. camp trailor is filled with junk and harley flstc. wife pourch swing welder tourches all tools = etc etc oh yes that was before when i was stock. now i have no idea on the mpg.
I don't see where it would hurt, but I would recommend changing out your transmission, transfer case, and rear diff with synthetic oil to better withstand the heat generated. Royal Purple, Redline are two brands that come to mind at the moment.
Personally I use Redline D4 ATF in my six speed and transfer case. Redline Shockproof in the rear axle. Good stuff.
I was told by you to use royal purple a few days ago, so i ordered it for rear. now my tranney is manual and i think i might get rp maxatf not sure yet, transfer case i don't use on trips never in 4/4 so might leave that alone. appreciate the advice.
When not towing what kind of mpg's are you getting. What are your rpm's at 70 mph? thanks
Running at 70mph rpm is around 1800-1900. Kinda hard to interpret tach that close. Straight highway driving get 23-25mpg depending on terrain. 75% highway, 25% city around 20-21. All city 18-20. Towing 11,500# 5th wheel 9-10.
