A/C on 93 XLT
My Airconditioning just quit. Was working last wknd but now wont come on. The switch inside indicates that the A/C is in the on position but nothing is happening. The compressor does not even attempt to turn on. All the fuses are OK. The switch for the defroster does nothing as well. I'm thinking somewhere there is an electrical problem of the signal not getting to the compressor. OR is the compressor simply dead? I tried to hooking up a multimeter right to the leads that are at the compressor and then cycled the A/C switch but had no change in the readings. I'm Stumped. Can any help me with where to look next? Thanks.

Could be low on refigerant. The signal to turn on the compressor clutch goes through a pressure switch on the accumulator. When the system pressure is low, this switch prevents the compressor from coming on. If you know the refigerant is fully charged, then the pressure switch could be bad. I believe you can test the A/C clutch by jumpering a hot wire off of the battery directly to the clutch.

And if when the clutch is jumpered and it engages and still no cold air blowing, the system probably has a freon leak. Reason why the clutch didn't kick in to begin with. A local shop could charge it and add some die to check for leaks. Don't be surprised if no leaks are found right away as it takes time for the die to circulate. You may get through the summer and then find it's failing again. At that point the leak should be evident by the shop technicians.
