1992 Explorer roof rack
I recently bought a 1992 explorer. It came with factory roof racks, where there are cross bars but no side bars.
I have yakima racks for a kayak for another car that I want to use, but I want to bolt them onto the existing set of crossbars on the explorer.
Does anyone make a product to do this ? I don't want to spend another couple hundred bucks with yakima or thule and have 4 crossbars to carry one kayak.
Thanks

I would not load anything heavier than skis on those cross bars--they are not meant to bear loads, but simply keep luggage from shifting. I have heard too many tales of woe from people who violated this rule (surfboards flying through the air, etc). I'm afraid you are going to have to bite the bullet and get a real rack if you want to carry your boat. I have had a Thule on my '91, carrying boards, bikes, and many other heavy items, and have never had a problem.

I got some Thule brackets that fit on the stock cross bars, 93 X. It was a mounting accessory for one of their bike racks or luggage compartments. I made custom angle brackets to mount a pick up truck bed box - one of those Rubbermade ones. I've loaded up to 100 pounds of stuff in the box and loaded up to 2 kyaks on the other side on top of the same stock cross bars. This is undoubtedly well beyond the manufacturer's rating but I've travelled hundreds of miles loaded with no problems.
