gear change

how easy is it to do a gear change in a rear end for a weekend mechanic? I know about back lash, and spacing, but not enough to do it. is there a book that teaches how to do it right, or is it worth it to have a pro do it, and how much can that cost?

rear gears

This is definitely a job that you want right the first time. I would recommend getting help from someone that has done a lot of rears. It is usually problem free, but if you have to start changing shims on pinion depth or end up with a funny gear pattern it can turn into a hassle. Generally you put the shims back were they came from and every thing will fall back into place. "BUT" if it doesn't thats when you have to change shims around according to how your gear pattern comes out. You also need access to a press to press bearing on and off. Once someone shows you how one time it is really pretty easy.
