Distributor question?

While removing my distributor on a 302 Ford. I noticed that the distributor rod going to the oil pump was stuck in the bottom of the distributor and then released as I pulled the distributor out. I noticed the rod did not go down and align with the oil pump (I have the timing housing off). If you look into the distributor hole, you can see the rod. I put a magnet in the rod hole and am able to lift the rod upwards, for whatever reason, I cannot remove it (pull it out). Nor can I put it down to where it goes into the pump drive? I've turned it, moved it etc. Any suggestions on how to put it back in the oil pump without removing the pan and oil pump?
Thanks? Got a little frustrating so I had to walk away from it. (plus the small magnet I was using fell into the pan so I have to fish it out which is no biggy). I think this is what they call Miller Time!

That's odd.... I know that there is supposed to be a star shaped washer that press fits onto the shaft, under the block "deck" for lack of a better word. It's job is to keep the shaft from pulling out as you (and I) have seen. Whatever the problem... I would suggest pullling the pan and pump and installing this washer on the shaft. If not, you'll have this problem everytime you pull the dizzy. Hopefully it's not on the side of the road somewhere

Good luck

Mike
