Your buddy has to return his truck to the stock programming using the tuner first, else the tuner will be "VIN Locked" and useless.
Nothing else has to be done to the tuner before using it (assuming you have a 94-03 7.3L PSD). If you haven't already, it's not a bad idea to open up the exhaust (i.e. 4" turbo back) to keep the EGTs down, and gauges for monitoring (EGT, boost, trans temp). While you're at it, you might as well go with an open element intake (i.e. Tymar).
I would find out what Revision of software is on the tuner, too. The new ones are a "Tri-Tune" programmer, meaning they have 3 programs (70/90/110). I believe some of the older ones only have 2 programs (60/85??). Just make sure you know what you're buying.
