Ive got a '91 full size with the electric 4wd button. My question is, when Im not in 4wd, and the tranny is in park, should I be able to turn the front drive shaft freely (Im talking about when the transfer case is in 2wd).
mine does, I have a lever shift transfer case. the front drive shaft is hard to turn, but it does. I dont think there is a problem, but wait for some others answer, they might have a more specific answer

depends on front locking hub.
un lock manual locking hub== front driveshaft spins easily.
automatic hub=== front driveshaft will rotate few turn and locks up.
Got it..thats what I thought...got a vibration up front and it feels like the drive shaft...time to put real hubs on anyway...any suggestions ? Im thinking WARN's
warn premiuns are great. they have a brass **** that does not protrude past the hub. i broke the plastic **** on my warn standards by hitting a small rock. warn did send me a new one free of charge just took 2 weeks to get it.
Vib. in 4wd-- might want to look at left and right u-joints and spindle bearings- as well -also look at front driveshaft u-joints. Never seen a working(one that locks hub in) cause a vib BUT I have been wrong before.PS I work for a Ford Dealer-service dept since 1977.
jacked her up tonight..looks like the hubs are unlocked, but when I went to spin the wheel it only made aprox 1 revolution, then it stopped. Pulled the wheel and I definetely need pads, so I guess Ill be doing that. Ill se how things look when I start to pull things apart. Can I open up those auto hubs and service them like I did my lockouts ?
Auto hubs only lock up when front driveshaft starts turning- should be free when just lifting wheel off ground and spinning. not much servicing can be done to these hubs.(other than cleaning and light oiling them- don't pack with grease).
