I have a pretty loud banging noise that has been right under the drivers side. I crawled under the truck and found that the front drive shaft (is it called that) has a problem. The joint between the two points has ALOT of play in it, under the rubber boot. I pulled the boot off, and could see that the piece that feeds into the front arm had play in there as if there used to be a bearing of some sort. Does anyone know what I am talking about? If so, would you know what that part is called? I am pleading ignorance on this issue so any help would be appreciated! Oh yeah, the truck is 4x4 if that makes a difference. Okay I think the proper word for the piece I am talking about is slip yoke.

It sounds like the splines in the slip-yoke are worn out. Sometimes, if the splines on the shaft end aren't too bad you can replace the yoke only. If the shaft end is also bad, a reputable driveline shop can cut it off and replace it or you could find a good salvage complete shaft.
