I have a 1978 F100. It's been sitting for a while, but it starts OK. The problem is in the transmission. It won't go into gear. It was driven around for a few months and then the problem started. Does anyone know what could be wrong?
if it's an auto, first check the fluid level, it can leak down when sitting. After that, it can get more expensive, you would need to pull the pan off to see what you find, A lot of sediment is bad, a little is normal.
The transmission is an automatic. It won't click through the gears. The gear shifter doesn't move at all. When I first started to look for the problem, I thought about the linkage but I haven't checked that yet. Is that something I could fix myself?
Sounds like the linkage is worn or bound up. Look over the linkage checking for play or looseness. Disconnect the linkage at the trans and move the lever on the trans to make sure the trans will still shift. (Be sure to block the tires while you do this) Let us know what you find.
