Shop floor Paint Question

I'm interested in painting my shop floor with 3 ft square black and white blocks. Has anyone done this before? Any suggestions on what products to use and tips on doing it would be appreciated.

Thanks

There are a number of threads here on painting garage floors but I don't recall any on painting square blocks. Tile and other coverings have been discussed.

I have heard that getting the concrete as clean as possible (with chemicals) will prolong the life of the paint because of better adhesion.

Surface prep IS the key....
best to "etch" the concrete chemically (get Behr @ home depot ) ....
Just saw this yesterday on diy tv - maybe find it on www.diy.com or do a google serach...
as far as painting blocks....
prep the surface and paint it all one color....
let it dry for the required time --- 3 days with good ventilation???

then mask off the area with long pieces of tape (or paper if you aren't a careful painter)
and paint every other block with the contrasting color....
Pay attention though - getting off a block can be easily done

No, haven't seen it painted that way but a guy I know tiled it and man, it looked sharp.

I'm going to paint my floor (hopefully by October) and I'm thinking about using this system: http://www.ucoatit.com/

I don't have ANY first hand knowledge of the product.

Hey guys;
I did that about 3 years ago.
I have a picture posted here (third one down):
http://www.doodlescustomartwork.com/MURALS.HTM

It cost me about $300 dollars to do ~670 ft^2.
I too used the Behr system (from Lowes).
There are many steps, and drying between.
In my case I:
1. Degrease
2. Etch
3. Primer
4. White
5. Draw design, fill in with color.

I will warn you that it does NOT hold up to laquer thinner...so don't spill any, and welding sparks will burn through, I always use a fiberglass fire blanket when welding.

There is another highly recommended 2 part epoxy system that I almost went with...but it was going to cost~$1000, and I seem to recall once you mix the 2 parts, you have 20 minutes to put it down! Joe Gibb's 20,000^ft Race shop was done with it, any they have many other industrial examples. The brand name escapes me right now...but I'll think of it...

Tennant coatings are good, but very costly. Valspar used to make a two part epoxy. I have been using this on my compressor room floor at work for over 20 years. Yes, it will need occasional touch-up. Valspar now has sold its industrial stuff to Jotun. Their series 84 is very good. Pot life is about 12 hours depending on local weather. If it's cold you can add an acclerator to hasten its curing time. One kit makes about 2 gallons. It rolls on nicely. Another good paint is their urethane floor coatings, also a two-parts mix.

Etching is okay, but be sure you don't over etch, and you neutralize the acid and rinse very well. You can use a clear sealer before using the color coat. It's different than the base paint.

Never ever paint without a NIOSH approved respirator. The fumes are strong!
