To bigric and kemicalburn who were kind enough to respond to my cry of help.
This is a follow up to my troubles withthe big bronco with a stuck e40d transmission. We finally got the transmission separated from the 5.8L engine. This required pounding the bellhousing and breaking it, drilling thru and drilling bolts out, applying the torch to the bolts in the flywheel and with lots of muscle power separated the two units apart. The fly was warped as a result. The reason that the transmission could not be slid of the converter is that there were metallic parts embeded on the converter shaft and the female mating part of the transmission causing the two units to lock together as a result I needed to have a transmission core for the replacement. Ford charges $1000.00 while the junk yard $200.00-$400.00.
I have learned that this transmission( e40d) has been upgraded. Is it because of a lot of problems with this transmission? There were a lot of metallic shaving all over including the cooler which has to be replaced and an inline filtter was added to the cooler line (not in the original package).
Thx-broncophile
that tranny was problematic till around late93 -94. thats when ford got there act together and started beefing things up. Sorry you had so much trouble. those trannies are very very expensive to if you havent already found out. I know for a good strong rebuild your looking at over 2G. Hope things go better for ya know
14? Wow! I wonder if one of them was the tranny pan and the seal for the shifter never sealing? hehe
I have about 225k on mine and it has slow leaks where the shifter enters the case and on one corner of the pan. I have replaced the seals and they still leak. Not a bad one tho. I only add a quart about every 3 months. Tranny still works fine otherwise.
Wow, glad to see that you got it out. I never would have imagined that sort of destruction. I just added a secondary filter to mine. My first one lasted about 100k miles; the second one has about 75k on it and I'm not sure what I'll do when this one dies. They're not cheap as you now know.
Question. Why couldn't you unbolt the converter from the flywheel?? I understand the converter being stuck on the shaft, but not to the flywheel. Seems extreme to have to smash the bellhousing. Even if the bolts were frozen to the converter you still could of heated them up from underneath, behind the engine oil pan. Anyway back to the transmission, I have a 96 bronco with 180 000kms 33" tires and I drive it hard and it still works great, so I guess ford must of fixed it by 96.
I have heard from a few guys on this Forum that Baumann Engineering is a good place to go for the E4OD, does anyone have any prices for a good transmission setup from them?
I do a lot of towing (under 2,000 pounds). What can I do to get this tranny beefy and more torque for pulling?
Best thing to do is get a good tranny cooler, inline filter and a tranny temp gauge. if you dont wheel it alot even a larger pan would help allowing for more fluid to be used. those would be a good start. Now if your running larger tires say 33's or bigger getting your gears swapped will also help alot.

The engine crankshaft and the TC could not be rotated to access the upper bolts. The lower bolts were no problemo.
RLKBOB= You are right on. The TC sounded like a maracas.
