Turn signal trouble

My turn signals don't work in my 76. The bulbs are good and I replaced the flasher. After removing the steering wheel I sprayed contact cleaner on the signal mechanism but no luck. Does anyone know of any voltmeter checks I can do to troubleshoot the problem prior to buying a new swith mechanism and do the blinkers work with the key in Acc.?

Hi, I just ran out and checked... My turn signals work in ACC. Mine is a 1970. Unfortunatly that is all I can do to help. I have never had a problem with signals so have never had to do the reseach.

Nick.

You may need to trace down all the wiring for the turn signals and brake lights. I would start at the wiring harness nearest the tail lights and check for the voltage using a multimeter, volt meter or even a test light. Disconnect the harness at the rear of the Bronco and start your test there. Be sure to connect to ground. If no voltage there, go to the next harness disconnect up neat the firewall and do the same tests. You will need a wiring diagramm to know which wire supplies what function, etc. If for instance you have the proper signal at the firewall and not at the rear, then the problem may be in that section from the firewall to the rear. Broken wires, etc. I took all my wiring loose, unwrapped it,made repairs and rewrapped it. If your harness connections are worn out, use trailer hookup plugs to make the repairs. Be sure to solder the connections and waterproof them.

Do not overlook the actuating cam in the steering column as well. This can cause all types of problems.

Check for good grounding.

I dont have a wiring diagram for yours, but the brake lights emergency flashers & turn signals are probably all wired to the same bulb. Are the brake lights and emergency flashers working?

Are you sure that you replaced the right flasher? There are 2 flasher units, one for the turn signals and one for the emer. flashers.
