I'm 24, live in Toronto, Ontario, and have been a huge Ford fan/supporter/etc my whole life, including supporting Ford Racing efforts in various major racing series since I was a wee lad. When I was 14-16, I dreamed of owning a late model F-Series pickup; collecting articles and pictures, counting them during drives sitting the backseat, bragging about them, etc.
So now I've decided to take the plunge and get my dream truck! I'm actively pursuing a 92-96 F-150 with the 4.9L 300ci I-6, and 5-speed manual. Does anyone have any advice for someone like me, considering I have quite a low budget to work with ($3000 as of right now, could hold off to save more though).
very good truck, strong dependable engine. Tranny isn't that great, but is fine if kept full of fluid and not abused.
Should I look for an auto (and if so, which in perticular?) or if the 5-speed manual tranny is best, what should I look for when looking over a potential truck for abuse?
I would look for the newest model you can afford, both the auto (E4OD) and 5 speed (M5OD) were revised and are much stronger than the earlier versions. 94 on should have the updated transmissions. It's hard to tell if the tranny has been abused, feel the shifter for any play, listen for any wooshing sounds from the tranny.
There is a fill plug on the side of the transmission, you will either need to purchase a pump or run a hose from the engine compartment down into the fill hole. make sure you use ATF in the 5 speed.
oil pressure is a recuring problem on a lot of 4.9s. may be sender, may be clogged oil pickup, maybe bad oil pump. gauge is just an idiot light. do a search for more info. i picked up my truck cheap because it had a clogged oil pickup. use motorcraft filters.check shakles and frame for rust. fuel filters get rusty if not serviced. rusty oil pan also a known problem.
