I have a '95 shorty and I am tired of replacing the hub caps that keep coming off due to the horrible road conditions in NY. I am thing I might want to go with a bigger rim than the 14 that is standard. Can anyone suggest a wheel that will fit the Aerostar? I do not want to alot of money but want a good buy for my money.
I have a 96 XLT with the 14" stock aluminum wheels. The hubcaps are small things that stay on very well. Perhaps you'd consider just getting some of these wheels from the junkyard, and putting 225-70-14s on them. It gives you a wider tire, and they look better than the 215-75-14s. Plus, there's no adjustment needed to the speedo--the 225-70-14 has the same circumference, just doesn't look it.
I believe you can swap out any Explorer/Ranger rim (15" or 16") from the same era. I would just not go to big and remember to adjust the rubber size so you don't have to worry about clearnence issues.
I have a '97 shorty on that I installed 15" ranger rims with 215/65 15's. They look great. They have a deep dish effect. $35 apiece at a tire and rim place. Make sure they are the 6" and not the smaller 5.5" rims. They also will take small hubcaps if you want, but you need special lugnuts.
Good Luck,
Beaned
I just put a set of turbines from an '89 crown victoria on my wife's van, and they look great! I upgraded my tires to 225/70/15, and couldn't see throwing out perfectly good tires(75%), and rims. I sitll have turbines on the vic, i just found a cleaner set for it at a price i couldn't refuse (FREE!!!). The tires on my wife's van are now 215/70/15, and have no rubbing issues whatsoever. I just have to correct the speedo for the 5mph difference, but no big deal. They were a direct fit with no problems with the lugnuts.
I bought a set of ranger mags for my van for 100.00$ they are 15" with 215 75 15 tires, I had nicer mags on it but I sold them when I got broadsided by an old lady backing out of her driveway (thought the van was going to be written off)I also still have the 4 stock aluminum Aerostar mags, 2 of which have snow tires mounted on them and the other two have spare tires on them I always keep a full-sized spare with me as i get flats at least once a week (Its used mostly as a delivery van and when driving on the side of the road you pick up alot of nails) but you could prob fit bigger tires if you chopped the fender wells, My only issue is that my front bumper scrapes the tire when i hit large bumps.
