Jumping the A/C Compressor

How do I do it?

I have searched but I can't find it here.

I need to charge the system, but can't get the compressor to start.

Thanks,

J

The low pressure switch is on the accumulator.

If the system is empty, you should evacuate it before trying to install refrigerant.

you can use a jumper wire on low press switch but make sure you evacuated the system

First, why is it empty, for how long has it been empty, and was it open to the atmosphere in the meantime? Evacuating is done to remove old refrigerant, and moisture from the system. It can also serve as an indication as to whether you will be wasting your money dumping refrigerant into a system with a leak.

Right now it is at 50-55psi. It is still cycling on and off. Posted in Ranger Forum. Should have brought that one over here.

Bad pressure switch? WOT?

This is getting to be a pain.

OK, I didn't make the mental connection. When you say 55 psi, is that with the engine running, fan on high and the A/C on max?

Sorry.

Yes. Then engine running, compressor on and at "max air" on high at the coldest setting.

The pressure on the low side is 50.

I had to jump the pressure switch to get it to engage though.

I know It shouldn't be jumped for long periods as not to burn out the compressor, but if it is fully charged, is that a problem?

And being that it is only a pressure switch, when it's jumped, will the system still shut down if I turn it off from inside the truck?

50 is actually a little high, unless the ambient temperature is very high. 35-40 would be better. Three things come to mind: bad pressure switch, over charged, or airflow restricted. I'd lean toward the pressure switch if you have to jumper it to even get the compressor to run at all, but you should check high side pressure also.

To answer, yes the system should still shut off at the switch even with the pressure switch jumpered.

Will it not run correctly when it's overcharged?

What should the highside pressure be?

Thanks for all your help.

An overcharge, especially if there is also a restriction in the system can cycle the compressor off via the high pressure safety switch. High side generally should be under 225-250 or so. Mine runs about 200 on the high side and 36 on the low side at 92 degrees outside. The vent temp comes down to 38 F on max.
