The temperature gauge on my '96 Explorer is no longer working. I've been told there's a sensor of some sort that might need to be replaced, or possibly the thermostat.
I'm thinking it's most likely a sensor, but have never replaced that item before. Where can it be found and how do I get to it?
Also, FYI, the temp. gauge will occasionally shoot up midway between cold and hot, and then dive back down to cold again.
Oooh-Kaaay...I have a '96 Explorere that has a high mount brake light on the top of the hatch in back. The 'ballast' has gone bad and needs to be replaced. It seems that this part is not sold or ordered through an auto parts store. Ford wants $90.00 for a new one. I've tried finding one at local auto wrecking yards without luck. Might there be websites where I can find the darn thing. I've looked without any luck so far. Any suggestions?

Look in your Haynes manual, it will tell you where the temp gauge sending unit is. Then just remove the wire & shove a nail in it and ground it to the engine & turn the key to run-not start- & if the gauge goes to full hot, replace the sending unit.
