A month and a half ago I was tossing around a football with some buddies, didn't pay attention for a split second, and caught the football with the tip of my thumb jamming it into a "z" shape and bending it backwards. The nurses were chuckling at me as the x-rays were being taken. The doctor reset it that night, I can use it fine, but I can hit my thumb the wrong way and have severe pain. How long do these take to heal?
I have dislocated a few digits over my life. They hurt, but they heal. They just take their time doing so. The last time I dislocated the tip of my left ring finger. I think it was almost a year that I regained the full range of motion and felt no pain. It was feeling much better after 6 months though.
Mine never healed and it has been 25 years. Karate, wrenching, wood chopping, sitting using the mouse, sometime it gets tweaked and you can feel it for a second. My finger which was dislocated much worse, is fine.
I did it to my shoulder, while water skiing of all things. It was only out for about 5 seconds, and pulled itself back in. It took a year before the kinks worked out. To do that to your thumb? UG-LY!
Look on the bright side...it will never really heal... I have dislocated both of mine over the years (been over 40 years now) had to tape one up when wrestling. The worst thing is when you go to open a car door - the ones with a push button - and your thumb pops. Good luck
Sorry for the discomfort man, sounds like it hurt, it may never be the same, both of mine pop out alot, daily I guess, don't pay much attention anymore really, it quits hurting after a while I guess. It's strange, I'm still double jointed on all the fingers on my left hand, and both thumbs, but my right fingers are normal. I jammed them real bad diving for a fumball once, got dog piled as soon as I got on the ball... had my fingers jabbed into the turf and about 8 offensive lineman on my back, those joints are still visibly swollen and that's been 12 years now.
I did the catch the ball wrong thing too !
I even said some bad words !!! and that was in High School YEARS ago...
things the COACH didn't even say :-)
slant route from left wing - ball on my right hip and slightly behind...
heel of my hand on my hip... hard thrown ball on the end of my thumb because I was starting my turn upfield early and WHAM !!!
still tweaks in some positions/situations... but then again, so does my knee, and my back, and my......
but my wife turned me on to shark cartilage --- helped tremendously with the joint and knee aches
I guess I RE-located my thumb. I was 16 and dropped a 600 pound cage on top of it. When I pulled it out, I left most of it under the cage.
After many skin grafts, I now have a thumb that's about an inch shorter and doesn't work quite the same. But on the bright side, I have had my "new" thumb longer now than I had my 'old' one.
I popped my thumb while pushing down on the rear binding release on my skis in 1978, and it still plays tricks on me now. About once a year it will 'give' while I'm pushing down on a thumbtack or whatever. My doc says once you pop it out, the socket is never the same; hairline cracks make it easier to repeat the dislocation. At least it doesn't affect grip strength, and I always use my ski pole to release the bindings now. Very common injury to skiers...
I broke mine in half near the bottom joint on my thumb. That was 35 years ago, and it still has pain at that location. Of course, the immediate pain subsided after a few months. But, I'm sure a dislocation will have less long term effects than a breakage......
I dislocated my thumb at the joint closest to my fingernail, and the first part came out of place, and onto the bone closest to your palm. The part under my nail was empty. It was pretty gross, and painful. I also dislocated my shoulder (from being tickled of all things) and every once in awhile it makes me appreciate the one that doesnt pop out more
