another great one to get that was mentioned is www.bigfix.com
once installed it stays int he background and immediately tells u of any updates to any of your windows programs from Microsoft....
I have been on a Mac for almost 9 years... I have never had a virus, or anything like that... Even now with the new OSX it is a dream... Never crashes... It is fast
With the new OS being Unix based, I cant speak loud enough!
It Rocks!
Good info here! I had PeoplePC installed on my new laptop as soon as I bought it and never had a problem with pop ups or viruses. Well I recently dumped PeoplePC and uninstalled their software. I was INSTANTLY hit with all kinds of stuff. I have SpyKiller which will clean off a lot of that junk but I need to make sure it doesn't get on here in the first place. I think I'm going to have to try some of the suggested software and see if it help.
I would also suggest the free program called Message Killer. http://www.voytech.net/
Works real well for me. Also, when you run the spyware scans etc., I had to run them twice. The second time I turned off windows xp restore before scanning. (Turn it on after running the scans.) I had an adware pop up file hiding in there that kept coming back after the scans cleaned things up.
Also look at this thread, which has some good info. I am still hoping that fn250 will post again with answers to my questions from my last post there.
Everytime you visit sites files are downloaded to your machine. Cookies in particular can be very harmful, they can reset your homepage, open pop-ups, and all kinds of other good things. As long as they stay on your machine, they can cause havoc.
As regular maintenance, users should clean out Temporary Internet Files, and Temp folders. In IE click on Tools go to Internet Options, under the general tab click Delete Cookies and Delete Files It's amazing what a couple of rogue cookies can do on your system.
or as an alternative you can follow the path
C:\Documents and Settings\your_user_name\Local Settings\
C:\ being your system root
your_user_name being the account you log on with
One other thing you can also do is to go to the Gibson Research Corp. (GRC) website and get the "three musketeers"-- dcombobulator, unplug-n-pray, and shoot the messenger. These will stop several annoying things from happening in your windows environment (ie. websites that can send windows system messages to you- bypassing your popup blocker). You can also check your firewall out and your vulnerability to port probing with the Shields Up! and Leaktest programs. GRC has some good stuff.
a little heads up to every one using spybot. it's a great program but be aware if you play around with the advanced settings of spybot and don't know what you are doing your headed for some trouble. if your curious leave it be trust me i wiped out half the computer last week and my wife still doesn't wan't me touching the computer. spyware removal programs can get you into trouble real quick so make shure to ask lots of questions.
that's the program i was trying to nuke well i got it and half the computer. i was trying to change a couple of things in the registry and i guess what i did was erase a couple of key programs i needed. my computer wouldn't open any of the programs after that and it started trying to open all the programs in windows media player. i tried to do a systems restore to a point before i installed the spybot software but it wouldn't let me so i had to do a non destructive reboot and every thing seems to be ok now. i lost all my settings for my internet stuff and had to reset it all. curiosity didn't fase the cat but it almost got me killed. boy was my wife mad.
The registry is no place to mess with, even experienced users should be cautious when deleting registry entries. If at all possible try using removal tools provided by symantec, Mcafee etc. do not try to do manual virus, trojan, spyware, malware removals. It can prove to be very destructive as robduval pointed out.
ummm yeah and even more destructive if your wife uses the computer more than you do. my curiosity gets me into all kinds of trouble but that's how i have learned how to fix things just not on the computer.
I usually do the same (mess with the comp), but I copy the hard drive by "ghosting" it, then I mess with the copy that way no one gets hurt (specifically me by my old lady).
when it comes to computers i'm dumber than a bag of rocks. now if it was a cat or mack or a freightliner were talking about what do you wan't to know i could tell you about it. as for the wife she told me if it wasn't fixed by the time she got home it was going to be detrimental to my health. oh i forgot to mention she's an avid target shooter.
