Hey guys, I'm a new member and would like to say thanks for all the great advice and information on the site. I just acquired a 65 F100 to use for my first restoration project and I'm new to pretty much everything. I'll try to get some pics of eventually so that everyone can see the progression....
My main problem at this point is that the tranny is stuck in reverse! The truck was running fine when my friend borrowed it, but he called and told me he couldn't get it out of reverse. I had adjusted the clutch last week because the guy before me had never adjusted it and it was slipping because it wasn't ever fully engaged. Anyway, has anybody ever had this happen before? I thought it was just the shift linkage but the shifter won't even move. BTW it's a four speed and the clutch will still engage.......
yep seen it happen, had it happen to me. you want the good news or the bad news first. well i guess there isnt any real good news so i will give you the bad. reverse idler is frozen on the shaft most likely. this means complete tear down new shaft and reverse idler, pluss the kit for the tranny. there is some good news tho,65-79 will work if you get the shaft to go with the tranny. there are only 3 choices i beleive, and most likely the one you got is gonna be the last one you can find.
it can be a hard choice, whether to rebuild or replace, but replacement is usually faster than rebuild for me.
Hey thanks Jim, I was afraid of an answer like that! But thats what makes this a 'project'. I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions later. Thanks for the heads up!
BTW, any idea what a new tranny will cost? or where I would start my search? I'm not even sure how to search for one on ebay....also, if I'm gonna build a power-house, what should I look at in order to 'upgrade' to a beefier tranny? Like I said, I am a newbie to this but lookin' to learn a ton.
NO NO NO Stop!!!!
Block both sides of a front wheel, Open the hood, look down at the column. See the two rod running to the trany? See a little sheet metal loop in between them? now pull or push the lever coming out of the column up or Down so there both in-line with the loop. This is neutral! It's VERY common to skip or hang up a well worn 3 on the tree shifter. Your Friend most likely did not pull back far enough to try to get it out of rev and now the things hung up.
Once its free-ed up (in-line with the loop) start the truck and confirm it neutral then try the shifter. put it back in neutral and go look at the arms and loop. You'll see the arms have a hole in them ~1/8 dia same as the loop. when the trucks in neutral you should be able to slide a drill bit right though the hole in thew loop and out the other hole if not adjust the rods. If you find they need adjusting STOP and order new rubber bushings and clips from one of the board sponsors in stall them and chances are it will line up again.
Best of luck.

Reason: opps
Check the side of the transmisison for casting numbers. You can tell which one you have from them. Most likely, you have either a T-98 or a T-18, if you have a granny gear 4 speeed with the factory floor shift. The T-18 is the better of the 2, and should be a bolt-in replacement if you have a T-98. Check the bolt pattern to make sure.
Keep in mind that other manufacturers used Borg-Warner transmissions, and that you could easily find what you need in a Chevy or Dodge truck as well.

Turns out the idler gear wasn't frozen, I'm not sure what exactly happened because my roomate fiddled with it and got it to work, but something about a pin being skipped or pushed to far? Not really sure. Opon investigating my tranny though, what came stock on the truck was a 3 on the tree. Somebody added a toploader 4-speed! I'll try and post a pic of the casting numbers. Thanks to everyone that replied and their 2 cents!
