Duplicate Keys

Does any one have any other options besides going though my dealer to get dup keys made. I only have the one that came with my used excursion. The dealer wants over $100 to get one programed.

Try a locksmith. They usually have a Look-a-like PATS key blank that is 40 percent cheaper than the dealer and can be programmed at less than the Dealer's $83.50 per hour Service rate.

Are you sure it is the programable key? My 04 F 250 is not the programable key. If not programable, try Wally World.

I removed the antenna ring from around the lock and put the PATS key inside the ring secured with zip ties. Then I took the whole antenna ring and secured it with zip ties up under the dash. Now I can use a plain cut key to operate the vehicle. I don't have to have those keys with huge heads on my key ring either. Now I can have a key for all three members of the family and a spare for the wallet for $1.25 each.

The programable key looks like it has a thick plastic case snapped around the end. The regular key looks as if it was dipped in black plastic & stamped. It is thin on the end.
Go to a key cutting store & ask to see both. Compare the thickness of yours to them.
Don't know about other F 250's , but I was disappointed when I bought my Lariat and found that with the "advanced security group", you get the regular key and a non locking glove box. Guess that is part of Ford's thinking , that it is only a truck.
Good Luck!

You can get the programmable key from Ford and program it yourself. Just have them cut it for you..to make them feel good. I read the instructions on how to do it somewhere...I think the manual that came with mine. I could be wrong there though, but I did read it. It's not that tough of a job to do.

You can program your own keys, BUT you have to have 2 programmed keys in order to do it. Otherwise the system won't allow programming of a new key. Thats why a new key from Ford costs so much. If you have both keys it should only cost about $18 for an extra key.

With my job I've used a locksmith a few times for various lost keys and Fords always cost me around $100 (programmed keys). For a non-programmed key around $50. If you can't tell if your's has the chip or not, just go to your local WalMart, hardware store, or whatever and have them cut you a non- key. If it works great! If not, then at least you have a spare in case you lock your keys in the truck.

Just be glad you don't drive a Mercedes (most of their newer keys are over five hundred).

I have been told, that using a "non key" in a programmed ignition will activate the anti theft mode, and the car will not start and will have to be reprogramed by the dealer. Can be costly.

In my experience that isn't correct, but maybe I've been lucky. I have had keys made before that myself and the locksmith thought were non-programmed keys only to find out that we needed one that was programmed. But once the new one was made, it worked fine. But like I said maybe I've been lucky.
